Are Wilti's suited to hobby farmers in SE Qld? 3 Years, 3 Months ago

Hi
I have a small acreage (3 acres) near Ipswich in Queensland and we are looking to get some livestock to keep the grass down. Someone suggested self shedding sheep to me, hence leading me to your site. Apologies if you only answer commercial queries, however I was wondering whether Wiltis would be suited to our situation? The alternatives that have also been suggested to us are goats (but I am concerned about confining them) and lowline cattle. We have about 1 1/2 acres that we don't keep mown and hence would let the livestock graze.
I would appreciate any wisdom you can offer on this issue.
Kind regards
Susie

Hi Susie, Thank you for your enquiry. Yes, the Wiltipoll sheep are suited to a wide range of climates and due to their ability to fully shed their wool, they are not at all prone to fly strike. They are low maintenance and easy to care for. They are very quiet and not likely to test or damage fences. Like most sheep, they are easier to handle if there is more than 1 sheep in the paddock. Instead of drenching, a teaspoon of copper sulphate in their water will control worms. They should be vaccinated annually against a range of diseases with a vaccine called Glanvac 6 in 1However, like all sheep, they need protection from dogs, especially packs of dogs. They are great browsers and will thrive on woody weeds and shrubs as well as fairly poor gasses. Their meat is lean and must not be overcooked.
I think the only breeder in Qld is Lea Johnston of Canina. Her Ph/Fax is 07 5483 3707
Hope this helps, Karl
